EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf program leaves the upper Midwest for the first time this season, as the Spartans travel to Daufuskie Island, S.C. for the Rees Jones Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday. The tournament had been hosted by MSU the last three seasons, but this year will be run by South Carolina at the Rees Jones Signature Course at Haig Point (par-72; 7,380 yards).
"This is an important event for our guys to stay focused on the plan we have in place," said first-year MSU head coach Casey Lubahn. "The conditions will be different than what we are used to in the Midwest and we will have to trust our instincts and adjust accordingly.
"Daufuskie Island is a special place and our guys know how fortunate we are to compete in such a wonderful event that is only possible due to the generosity of the residents and club at Haig Point Golf Club. We look forward to the challenge and expect to be in contention the final day."
The Rees Jones, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET both Monday (36 holes) and Tuesday (18 holes), features Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Georgia State, Iowa State, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Michigan State, South Carolina, South Florida, UNC Wilmington, Wake Forest and Winthrop.
The Spartan lineup will include seniors Dan Ellis and Chris Mory, junior Matthew Moseley, sophomore Carson Castellani and freshman McCormick Clouser.
Michigan State has been off to a solid start in the first three events this fall, finishing second at the Fossum Invitational, third in the Wolverine Intercollegiate and fifth at the weather-shortened Inverness Intercollegiate last week. The Spartans have placed ahead of multiple top-50 programs so far, and have beaten each Big Ten opponent they have squared off against.
Ellis has led MSU in each event, posting a top-5 showing in all three, while Moseley has also been consistent, placing in the top-20 in all three. Clouser had his best career finish last week, tying for seventh. Castellani returns to the MSU lineup for the first time since the season opening Fossum.
Michigan State finished fourth in the first two Rees Jones Intercollegiates (2008, 2009) and fifth in last season's event. Only two Spartans in this week's lineup have played at the Rees Jones Signature Course, with Mory making the trip to South Carolina the last two seasons and Moseley playing last year.
