Women's Tennis Finishes Second Day of Wildcat Invite

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State women's tennis team wrapped up the second day of the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Northwestern on Saturday with the first and second rounds of singles competition. The Spartans notched four singles victories on the day.
In the Flight A Singles, junior Amy Barton fell in her first two matches of play to Alwai of South Carolina, 6-4, 6-3 and Berner of Wisconsin, 6-1, 6-4.
Sophomore Olga Chernova captured a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Wofford of Oklahoma in Flight B Singles, but then lost her next match to Kanakova of South Carolina, 6-3, 6-0.
Freshman Julianne Gruber came out victorious over Edell of Northwestern 6-2, 6-0 in Flight C Singles. Gruber lost her next match to Western Michigan's Guzairova, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Also competing in Flight C Singles, was sophomore Katarina Lingl who notched a first-round victory over Knoppe of Illinois-Chicago, 6-2, 6-4. Lingl was then dropped by South Carolina's Pereira, 6-4, 6-0.
In Flight D Singles freshman Hilary Hager pushed Sharples of Illinois-Chicago to a three-set match before losing in a, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 score. Hager was able to bounce back against Gilbert of Minnesota, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Jenifer Yen fell to Lancaster of Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-2 and Craig of Illinois-Chicago, 6-1, 6-0.
The Spartans will be back in action tomorrow to complete the last round of singles play at the Wildcat Invitational. Action begins at 9 a.m.
