EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team, led by victories over ranked wrestlers by Dan Osterman and Ian Hinton and a fall by Sean McMurray at 157 pounds, defeated No. 14 Illinois, 21-15, Sunday afternoon at Jenison Field House. The Spartans (9-4, 1-3 Big Ten) brought energy and determination into each and every contest and were able win six of the 10 matches.
"Our theme all year is `just find a way,'" said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "Just try and find a way to get it done, and we're trying to get everybody to take ownership in that. We have some challenges, we have so many guys out with serious injuries, but we have a really great group of kids that are wrestling hard. It very much was a team effort, and that, honestly, is really where most of the satisfaction comes. You do your job, but it's the team that makes you feel overwhelmingly good, and that was a nice win for us."
The afternoon dual between the Spartans and the Fighting Illini (3-4-1, 1-3-1 Big Ten) started off in the heavyweight division. Joe Rizqallah was able to spark the Michigan State team with a 7-3 decision over Pat Walker of Illinois. Rizqallah maneuvered a near fall in the second period, and was able to keep the pressure on throughout the match, en route to his 16th victory of the season.
The momentum generated by Rizqallah in the heavyweight match carried over into the 125-pound bout. Eric Olanowski of the Spartans was able to defeat Logan Arlis of Illinois in an 8-6 decision, giving the Spartans a quick 6-0 lead.
Illinois garnered energy of their own in the form of consecutive victories at 133 and 141 pounds. No. 8 B.J. Futrell of Illinois recorded a technical fall over Chris Lyon, 24-9, at 133 pounds. Joel Trombly fought hard for Michigan State but wasn't able to hold of Daryl Thomas of Illinois, losing a 13-7 decision at 141 pounds.
In a key match, Osterman defeated No. 14 Eric Terrazas of the Fighting Illini at 149 pounds. The score was tied heading into the third period, and Osterman was able to escape the grasp of Terrazas, giving him the 3-2 decision.
"I knew it was going to be a good match," said Osterman, who lost to Terrazas 3-2 at the Midlands Championships earlier this year. "We worked on some things this week that I had done wrong (in the first meeting), so I was really confident going into the match. My philosophy is to attack a lot, have fun, and if I wrestle my hardest, I'm not disappointed with the outcome. Luckily I was the one who won today."
"Terrazas is very, very tough and hard to score on," said Minkel. "He's a very crafty guy with a lot of experience. That was a signature win for Danny."
Coming out of intermission, McMurray was able to spark his team and the Michigan State fans in the 157-pound match against Jackson Morse of Illinois. Midway through the second period, McMurray recorded a takedown, and just seconds later had Morse on his back for the fall at the 4:40 mark. In addition to giving MSU a 15-8 advantage, the pin had an extra special meaning for McMurray.
"It felt awesome," said McMurray. "It was actually my first fall at Jenison, actually my first win at Jenison, being a freshman. It felt awesome, but we kept focus and we still had matches to go. That wasn't the end of the dual meet by any means.
"To me, it meant a lot, because my brother is about to leave for his second tour in Iraq, and he actually made it up here today. It was the first time he's seen me in a Spartan singlet and I got it done. To me, and to my family it means a lot, and to the team it means a lot. He (my brother) is really excited, he is my number one fan, and actually didn't see me win a state title until my senior year in high school. He is always there for me. When he is back overseas he will be watching my matches. I wish him the best, and I know that he is rooting for me."
At 165 pounds, Conrad Polz received a major decision for his 14-5 victory over Bobby Nash of MSU, cutting the Spartan lead to 15-12.
The 174-pound match featured Curran Jacobs and Ben Friedl. It was a back-and-forth match but Jacobs was able to win once again in the third period, as his takedown of Friedl with just 14 seconds remaining was the difference in the match. A 6-5 decision gave Jacobs and MSU the win.
"The third period is where I look to finish. Once again I dug myself out of a hole and came up with a victory," Jacobs said.
Ian Hinton defeated No. 18 Tony Dallago, 3-2, in another low scoring match in the 184-pound class. Hinton's win secured the dual victory for the Spartans as they took a commanding 21-12 lead going into the final match.
In the final match at 197 pounds, Joe Barczak earned the 3-2 decision over Tyler Dickenson, bringing the final score to 21-15 in favor of Michigan State.
"I feel that today was just an all out team effort," Osterman said. "Everybody came together. It always fun to win at home, especially against a ranked opponent."
The Spartans face off against No. 1 Penn State this Friday, Feb. 4. The match will take place at Jenison Field House at 7 p.m.
