
Women's Tennis Falls Short to Akron, 4-3

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team (2-1) fell to Akron today (Jan. 28) at home by a close score of 4-3. The Spartans were able to claim the doubles point, earning two of the three doubles victories, but fell short to the Zips in singles play. Sophomores Amy Barton and Michaela Silesova recorded the only singles victories in MSU's first loss of the season.
Barton defeated Zara Harutyunyan by a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 while Silesova topped Natalia Kuvakina, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Valentina Ruskaova fell to Angelina Jogasuria, 6-3, 7-5. Angelika Jogasuira downed freshman Marina Bohrer, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. In a tight match, senior Whitney Wilson fell to Pran Pantusart, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. Dana Guentert also fell in a close match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, partners Barton and Borhrer recorded their third victory of the season over Harutyunyan and Angelina Jogasuira, 8-6. Rusakova and Wilson fell, 8-6, to Pantusart and Angelika Jogasuria. Guentert and Herzog defeated Jeremie Benjamin and Baronayte, 8-5.
The Spartans return back to the court next week when they host Bowling Green at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Friday, Feb. 4th at 3 p.m.
