
Women's Swimming & Diving Falls to Michigan, 141-93

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming & diving team hosted Michigan on Friday, Jan. 28 at Charles McCaffree Pool at IM West. The Spartans competed strong but were unable to pull out the win, falling 141-93. Earning two wins on the springboards was Sarah Clay, placing first on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
"I was happy with some of the swims today," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "But, we are going to have to do a lot better tomorrow against Oakland. I was really happy this evening for Sarah as she beat an All-American on both the boards today."
Clay claimed her first crown of the day when she posted a score of 280.35 on the 1-meter springboard. Clay topped the next closest diver by 10.81 points. The Fishers, Ind., native posted her second win against Michigan with the top score in the 3-meter springboard with a 359.58 mark. Clay won the event by 18.45 points.
In the closest swimming event of the night for MSU, Samantha Hilk placed second in the 100-yard backstroke. Hilk turned in a time of 59.37, trailing the first-place swimmer by 0.21.
Becca Ebner also posted a second-place finish for the Spartans when she finished the 100-yard butterfly in 56.33. Ebner was only 0.83 out of first place in the event.
Clocking a time of 4:36.57 for second-place in the 400-yard IM was Alex Pierce.
KJ Burkland rounded out the Spartans who were top-two in their respective events with a time of 10:25.75 in the 1000-yard freestyle for second place.
The Green and White returns to action tomorrow (Jan. 29) when the complete team travels to Rochester, Mich. for the team's final joint dual of the season. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the OU Aquatic Center.
