Women's Tennis Blanks IPFW and Detroit in Season Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team opened up its 2011 season by picking up two wins over IPFW, 7-0 and Detroit, 7-0.
The Spartans downed IPFW, 7-0, in their first match of the day. In doubles competition, sophomore Amy Barton and freshman Marina Bohrer edged Amy Recht and Ingrid Ballus, 9-7. Senior Whitney Wilson and freshman Valentina Rusakova topped Alex Forsyth and Caterina Kiefer, 8-1. Partners freshman Katarina Lingl and sophomore Nicole Herzog posted a close 8-7 (4) victory over Yuka Kobayashi and Raquel Vescovi.
MSU went 6-0 in singles play with Barton recording a 6-4, 6-3 win over Recht. Rusakova defeated Ballus, 6-1, 6-4. Bohrer edged Vescovi 6-4, 7-6. In a tight match, Wilson pulled an upset over Kiefer, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Red-shirt sophomore Dana Guentert downed Kobayashi, 6-1, 6-1. Lingl recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Forsyth.
Later in the afternoon, the Spartans completed their second sweep of the day, blanking Detroit, 7-0. Barton and Bohrer recorded their second doubles win of the day over Amanda Cornwell and Carolina Salas, 8-3. Rusakova and Lingl topped Raina Halabi and Elena Strakhova, 8-2. Guentert and Herzog also defeated Julia Fernades and Erin Weldon by a score of 8-2.
In singles action, Rusakova downed Salas, 6-2, 6-2. Bohrer edged Cornwell, 6-1, 7-6 (3). After falling in the first match, Wilson downed Strakhova, 4-6, 6-2, 10-1. Guentert defeated Halibi, 6-0, 6-1. Lingl posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Fernandes. Freshman Jennifer Yen recorded her first singles win of the day over Weldon, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
The Spartans return back to action Friday, Jan. 28th when they host Akron at 3 p.m. The match will take place at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
