PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Michigan State gymnastics team (0-5, 0-2 Big Ten) fell to Pittsburgh, 192.175-191.175, in its second road competition of the weekend. Freshman Sarena Bumbarger and junior Daneen Haba gave the Spartans individual wins on the beam and bars, respectively, against the Panthers.
Senior Nicole Argiros was the top Spartan on the vault for the third-straight meet with her score of 9.750. Argiros' mark was good enough for second place on the apparatus. Brittney Harris of Pittsburgh led the way with a 9.775 mark. Molly Moyer, also of Pitt, rounded out the top-three scorers on the event with a 9.650 mark. The Panthers topped MSU in the team scoring, 47.925 to 47.825
Haba finished tops on the bars with a score of 9.775. She was joined by fellow junior Jackie Berg in second (9.750) and freshman Dani Levy with a personal-best mark of 9.725, tying for third place. Levy was joined by Amy Varela of Pittsburgh in third. The Green and White finished ahead Pitt on the event, 48.475 to 47.950.
Bumbarger set a career-best mark on the beam when she posted a winning score of 9.650 to tie for first with Katie O'Rourke from Pitt. Sophomore Shanthi Teike joined Bumbarger on the podium with her third-place finish, tallying a 9.625 mark. Pitt topped the Spartans on the event by a score of 47.750 to 46.550.
Teike earned another top-three when she placed third on the floor with a score of 9.775, leading the way for Michigan State. Moyer won her second event of the day with a score of 9.825, and was joined by teammate Mallory Brewer in second (9.800). Pittsburgh led MSU in the final event, 48.550 to 48.325.
Teike once again was the top all-arounder for the Spartans, placing second with a combined score of 38.500. Harris was first in the all-around with a score of 38.575 while Kori MacDonald of Pittsburgh was third, scoring 38.075 points. Levy competed in the all-around for the first time in her MSU career, tallying a 37.125 mark.
The Spartans return home on Saturday, Jan. 22 when they host Big Ten foe Minnesota at 3 p.m. in Jenison Field House. The meet will be covered by the Big Ten Network, and will be shown tape-delayed on re-aired Saturday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m.
