Track & Field Opens Kentucky Invitational with Field Events

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Michigan State track & field team opened its 2011 indoor season on Friday, Jan. 14 at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky. Kicking the season off on a positive note where the men's weight throwers who placed second through fifth, finishing as the top collegiate throwers in competition.
Leading the weight throwers was Anthony Agrusa, tossing a second-place distance of 19.96m. Brad Wentzel followed Agrusa in third with a mark of 19.73m. Jay Gillespie was fourth (19.07m) while Lonnie Pugh rounded out MSU's throwers in fifth (18.59m).
The women throwers were paced by Beth Rohl with her second-place toss of 19.89m in the weight throw. Ashley Lawrence followed in eighth (17.23m) while Catherine Daniels rounded out the top-10 finishers (16.79m).
On the pole vault, Ashley Smith led the Green and White in sixth, recording a mark of 3.70m.
Kurt Schneider led the men jumpers in the high jump, tallying a height of 2.09m for sixth place overall. Cliff Miller was tied for seventh (2.04m) and Kevin Jackson was ninth (2.04m). Miller cleared on the first attempt, while Jackson required three attempts.
MSU returns to action tomorrow (Jan. 15) when it closes out competition at the Kentucky Invitational.
