
Spartan Gymnastics Receives NACGC/W Academic Recognition

EAST LANSING, Mich. - As announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W), the Michigan State gymnastics program was recognized for having the fifth-highest grade point average (GPA) in the nation this year with a 3.6194 composite team mark. In addition, nine Spartan gymnasts were named Scholar All-Americans for having a GPA of 3.5 or better during the 2009-10 academic year.
Leading the team with a 4.0 GPA for the year were seniors Megan Bergland and Kelly Moffitt. This is the fourth-consecutive season each were honored by the NACGC/W. The two seniors were two of 67 student-athletes to boast 4.0 GPAs for the 2009-10 school year. Making their third appearance on the list was senior Emily Lopatofsky and juniors Nicole Heikkila and Kelsey Morley. Sophomore Selina Rodriguez is making her second appearance, while junior Kathryn Mahoney and sophomores Alyssa Brennan and Daneen Haba appear for their first time.
With this year's total, head coach Kathie Klages has now posted 95 student-athletes on the NACGC/W Scholar-Americans list over her 20 years at the helm of the Green and White.
The Spartans led all schools in the Big Ten Conference with nine Scholar All-Americans. Illinois and Iowa each had eight, while Ohio State saw six representatives. Michigan, Minnesota and Penn State all added five gymnasts to the list. In all, 46 student-athletes from the conference were honored
Southern Utah earned top team honors with its 3.8923 team GPA. Southeast Missouri State (3.8905), Wisconsin-Lacrosse (3.6600) and Western Michigan (3.6323) occupied positions two through four.
