
Dan Schemmel Named Assistant Swimming and Diving Coach

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State swimming and diving head coach Matt Gianiodis announced today (Aug. 26) the hiring of former Spartan Dan Schemmel as assistant coach. Schemmel previously served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Arizona from 2008 to 2010.
While with the Wildcats, Schemmel had the opportunity to work with 28 All-Americans, 12 Olympians from seven different countries and eight American record holders. In 2009 with his aide, UA saw the women post a third-place finish and the men place sixth at the NCAA Championships. In 2010, Arizona's men's team finished third, while the women ended the championships in fourth.
While in Arizona, Schemmel also was an assistant coach with the Tucson Ford Aquatics for two years.
Schemmel graduated from Michigan State in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. The Rockford, Mich., native, also received his master's degree in educational psychology from the University of Arizona in 2010.
The former Spartan swimmer first arrived at MSU in 2004 when he served as a team manager for the swimming and diving team during his freshman year. His sophomore and junior seasons saw him compete in the freestyle events at several competitions. His senior year saw him serve as a student assistant coach.
Schemmel was a four-year letterwinner at Rockford High School. He earned all-conference honors both his junior and senior seasons. He also competed on the water polo team. Schemmel was a state and sectional qualifier as a member of the Rockford Riptide and West Michigan Swimmers.
