EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior starting pitcher A.J. Achter was selected in the 46th round (No. 1,395 overall) of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Achter was the second Spartan taken in the draft, as junior shortstop Jonathan Roof was chosen in the eighth round Tuesday by Texas.
Achter garnered the 2010 Robin Roberts Most Valuable Pitcher honor after his first year as the team's No. 1 starter and ranking fourth in the Big Ten with 74 strikeouts. Achter led the Spartan starting pitchers with a 4.20 ERA in 14 starts. His 98.2 innings pitched rank second, behind only Bryan Gale (100, 2002), on the MSU single-season list. He also ranked second in the Big Ten in innings pitched.
His 4-4 record included consecutive shutouts wins over Notre Dame and Oakland. The junior earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week and was named to the College Baseball Foundation's Weekly National All-Star Lineup on March 22 after striking out a career high nine batters in his complete-game shutout win over Notre Dame.
