EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's basketball and men's swimming programs received Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA on Wednesday, May 12. The recognition is based on the most recent Academic Progress Rate figures as part of the 2010 NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program. MSU was one of just 37 schools, including three Big Ten institutions, to be honored in men's basketball and one of just 15, including two in the conference, to be recognized in men's swimming. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
"This recognition shows both coaches' attention to detail, personal responsibility, and commitment to the student-athlete," said Jim Pignataro, Michigan State Associate Athletics Director for Student Services. "The vast majority of our sports programs are recognized by their peers for their academic achievement; however, it is great to see these student-athletes and coaches being recognized for their work on a national level".
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
