EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis sophomore Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) was honored as the team's recipient of the 2010 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award as announced by the Big Ten office on Thursday, April 29.
These particular athletes chosen for this honor have not only seen success on the court, but have also succeeded academically, civically and personally.
Hulewicz spent a majority of his sophomore season at the top of the Spartan lineup at No. 1 singles. At the top position in the singles lineup, Hulewicz posted 11 wins on the year. He also saw action in the No. 2 spot where he tallied an impressive 3-1 record. Overall, Hulewicz posted a 14-11 singles tally. Hulewicz's 14 wins leave him secong on the team in total victories.
Hulewicz only participated doubles action three times, partnering with three different teammates. In doubles action, Hulewicz recorded a 2-1 mark, with both wins coming at No. 3 doubles.
Not only has Hulewicz performed successfully on the tennis court, but also in the classroom. The education major currently boasts a 3.21 grade-point average and was a part of the 2009 team to receive ITA All-Academic Honors.
Hulewicz's actions within the community also make him an excellent recipient of the honor. Throughout the 2009-10 season, Hulewicz participated in tennis assemblies with elementary students, a Police Athletic League tennis mixer, the "March is Reading Month" program at Aerial middle school and a wheel-chair tennis program.
Hulewicz is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the Big Ten office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
