Men's Golf Finishes 10th at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Michigan State men's golf team wrapped up play at the Western Intercollegiate on Sunday, finishing 10th with a 55-over par 1105 (366-359-380). Senior Jack Newman led the Spartans and continued his past success at Pasatiempo Golf Course, placing sixth at 2-under par 208 (68-69-71).
Newman posted his fifth top-10 finish in this season's eight stroke play events. It was also his 13th career top-10 finish, including three at the Western Intercollegiate, which he won in 2008 and was the runner-up in 2009. Newman had three more birdies today to finish the tournament with a team-high 11, including the par-4 seventh hole in all three rounds.
Sophomore Chris Mory and freshman James Ross were among a group tied for 37th at 10-over par 220. Mory (75-73-72) had the second lowest round of the day for the Spartans with a 2-over par 72. He also had three birdies today to bring his tournament total to 10. Ross shot a 7-over 77 today after rounds of 71 and 72 yesterday.
Freshman Matthew Moseley tied for 58th at 17-over par 227 (75-71-81). Sophomore Dave Ellis carded a 22-over 232 (77-74-81) to tie for 66th. Senior Andrew Ladwig was 72nd after shooting a 24-over 234 (79-76-79).
No. 4 Oregon pulled away from No. 5 UCLA to claim the team title, carding a 12-under par 1038. The Ducks went one-two atop the individual leaderboard with Eugene Wong finishing first at 8-under 202 and John Patton second at 5-under 205.
The Spartans return to action next weekend, hosting the Fossum Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Forest Akers West.
