TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Michigan State track & field program concluded action at the Indiana State Quadrangular today (April 17). The Spartan men captured the team crown with 199.5 points, while the women finished second with 173.5 points. On the day, MSU captured eight individual titles to add to the five from the day before.
"I thought the weekend went really well," said director of track & field and cross country Walt Drenth. "We started off with really good performances from the men's and women's discus throwers. Both Emily MacLeod and Patrick Grosskopf went really strong all weekend long. I talked to the team about the importance of getting off the mark strong, and I thought it was important for us to send a message as to how we were going to compete as a team. "
Finishing first in the 100m dash was Erica Mann with a time of 11.79. In the 200m dash, Mann placed second (24.08), while her teammate Charelise Davis won the event in 24.03.
"Erica Mann was all over the track doing great things for us all weekend in the 4x100m relay, the 100m, the 200m and anchoring the 4x400m relay, which is a tough thing to do after a long weekend," added Drenth.
Mann and the 4x400m women's relay team of Alysson Bodenbach, Amelia Bannister, Leah Elenbaas and Mann placed third with a time of 3:47.69.
Alysson Bodenbach posted a third-place time of 56.72 in the 400m dash.
Capping off a stellar weekend was Emily MacLeod who finished the 1,500m run in first place with a time of 4:33.33.
Both Leslie Aririguzo and Carlie Green finished second in their respective events, the 100m hurdles (14.09) and 3,000m steeplechase (10:50.22).
In the women's field events, Ashley Smith placed first in the pole vault with a height of 3.73m, while Rebecca Buchholtz finished the high jump in second (1.70m).
Ashley Lawrence capped off her weekend with a third-place showing in the shot put with a toss of 15.29m.
Yury Ratomski led the men in the 400m dash with a time of 48.63, while Jake Hamilton followed in third with a 50.22 mark.
Brandon VanDriel finished the 100m dash in 10.74, good enough for third-place overall.
The men also had Stephen Humes and Ian Boyle place first and second respectively in the 800m run. Humes crossed in 1:52.06, while Boyle was just behind in 1:52.49,
Placing first and third in the 110m hurdles was Shane Wells (14.10) and Keenan Michael (14.58), respectively.
"Keenan Michael was another one who was all over the place, running in the 4x100m, then 10 minutes later running the intermediates (hurdles), and running them very well. He then came back and ran really well in the 200m and also the first leg of the 4x400m. That is the type of leadership and expectations we are looking for from everyone on the team," said Drenth.
The 4x400m relay team of Michael, Humes, Hamilton and Ratomski finished in first with a time of 3:15.74.
Placing third in the 3,000m steeplechase was Spencer Beatty with a time of 8:57.32.
The Spartans saw strong finishes from Kurt Schneider in the high jump with a height of 2.15m. Logan Lynch placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 5.18m.
Jerry Hessell placed third in the javelin with a throw of 50.10m.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend, split between the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, the Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. and the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
