LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Michigan State gymnastics team (11-6) closed out its spring trip on Sunday (March 14) when it traveled to Los Angeles for a tri-meet hosted by UCLA. The Spartans and the Bruins were joined by Cal State Fullerton. Placing third in the all-around was senior Nicole Curler who recorded a score of 39.125.
No. 3 UCLA finished first with a team score of 196.525, while the Spartans placed second with a 195.950 mark. CSF rounded out the competitors in third with a 193.875 score.
MSU was led on the vault by freshman Shanthi Teike, who recorded a personal-best score, and senior Rochelle Robinson, who each tied for fourth on the event with a 9.850. UCLA swept the top-three honors with Elyse Hopfney-Hibbs and Tauny Frattone tying for first (9.950). Vanessa Zamarripa was third with a score of 9.925. The Spartans placed second as a team behind UCLA (49.425) with a score of 48.950. The Titans posted a score of 48.025.
The Spartans were led by Robinson on the bars with her tie for third with a score of 9.875. Zamarripa led all gymnasts in first with a 9.950, while Lichelle Wong placed second with a 9.900. The Bruins were first (49.375) with MSU in second (49.050) and the Titans in third (48.775).
Once again, the beam proved to be MSU's best event of the competition. The Spartans took first in the event with a 49.075 score, while CSF followed with a 48.500 and UCLA in third (48.350). Junior Kelsey Morley led all MSU gymnasts in third with a 9.875 mark. Zamarripa took first (9.925) with UCLA's Niki Tom in second (9.900).
The floor saw Curler lead Michigan State in fourth with a score of 9.850. UCLA once again swept top-three honors with Hopfner-Hibbs in first (9.925), Zamarripa second (9.900) and Brittani McCullough third (9.875). The Bruins finished first as a team on the vault (49.375) with MSU second (48.875) and CSF third (48.575).
Curler led the Spartans in the all-around in third (39.125). Zamarripa finished first in the all-around with a score of 39.700. Alaina Baker of CSF finished second with a 39.150 mark.
MSU will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 20, when it hosts Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. The competition will be held at IM West on the campus of Michigan State.
