Spartans Fourth After First Day of Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. - After the first day of the 2010 Pinehurst Intercollegiate, the Michigan State men's golf team is fourth with an opening round four-over par 292. Senior Jack Newman led the Spartans with a one-under 71 at the historic Centennial Pinehurst No. 8 on Friday.
Newman is tied for fifth individually, three shots behind Kevin Foley of Penn State, who shot a four-under 68. Newman carded three birdies on the day.
Sophomore Chris Mory is tied for 15th with a one-over 73. The freshman duo of James Ross and Matthew Moseley each posted two-over 74s to sit among a group tied for 23rd. Ross led the Spartans with four birdies in his opening round. Sophomore Dan Ellis rounded out the MSU golfers with a 13-over 85.
Penn State holds a one-stroke team lead, shooting an even par 288. Eastern Kentucky is second (one-over 289), followed by Virginia Tech (two-over 290).
Tomorrow's second round begins at 9:54 a.m. ET for the Spartans.
