
Women's Tennis Picks up Win over Evansville

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team dominated competition, defeating Evansville, 6-1, on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility to arrive at an overall record of 5-4.
"Overall the team played well today," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We came out ready to play and that showed through the results. We've been working hard to improve and we're getting better as time progresses."
MSU received the doubles point after picking up two of the three doubles matches. At the No. 2 spot, freshman Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia) teamed together with junior Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.) to post an impressive win over Aleksandra Dzakula and Carolyn Caire, 8-1. By the same margin, senior Christine Milliken (Traverse City, Mich.) and freshman Nicole Herzog (Manillia, Brazil) defeated Pin Sorenson and Ashton Schwerin.
The Spartans picked up five of the six singles matches as Herzog, Barton, Wilson, Milliken and sophomore Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia) all defeated their Evansville opponents. Herzog posted a win over Theadora Kotsiou at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 10-3, while Barton picked up the win at No. 3 singles over Sorenson, 6-0, 6-4. Wilson outlasted Dzakula in a three-set match, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 4 slot and Ivanova dominated at the No. 5 position defeating Schwerin, 6-1, 6-0. Milliken picked up the last win for the Spartans at the No. 6 spot after topping Caire, 6-3, 6-0.
There were also two exhibition matches played, both of which were claimed as Spartan victories. Sophomore Ashley Stockwell defeated Jessica Raatz, 6-4, 6-1, and freshman Renata de Paiva defeated Payal Sharma, 6-4, 6-1.
MSU next hosts Western Michigan on Friday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
