EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State track & field team opened up the weekend on Friday, Feb. 19, at the GR Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University. Looking to use the weekend as a tune-up for the Big Ten Championships next weekend, the Spartans sent a select few members of the team to aid in preparation.
Representing the Spartan runners was Leslie Aririguzo in the 60m hurdles. Aririguzo finished tied for first with a time of 8.80.
The GR Championships allowed several throwers the chance to see action before next weekend.
In the shot put, Ashley Lawrence took first-place honors with her toss of 14.91m, while Shatora Lewis finished second with her distance of 13.86m. Catherine Daniels rounded out the MSU shot put in sixth with a mark of 13.21m
The women occupied places three through five in the weight throw with Lawrence in third (18.07m), Daniels in fourth (17.44m) and Lewis in fifth (15.57m). Robyn Whalen placed eighth for the Spartans with a hurl of 15.57m.
The men also saw success in the weight throw as they also placed third through fifth in the event. Leading the way was Brad Wentzel in third (19.75m), followed by Jay Gillespie in fourth (19.45m) and John Barrett in fifth (17.05m).
The Spartans concluded the weekend at the Silverston Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 20. The Silverston allowed several sprinters the chance to see some final action as Yury Ratomski finished first in the 200m dash (22.02) and second in the 60m dash (6.84).
David Callile also competed for the Green and White in the 200m dash as he finished fifth in 22.68. Callile placed eighth in the 400m dash with a time of 51.59.
Rounding out the MSU competitors was Aririguzo who competed in the 60m hurdles and the 60m dash. In the hurdles, Aririguzo placed second with a time of 8.67, while placing 10th in the dash with a 7.86 time.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend when the men travel to Minneapolis, Minn. and the women to University Park, Pa. for the Big Ten Championships on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27-28.
