
Swimming & Diving Concludes Action at EMU Invite

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving team wrapped up action at the EMU Invite in Ypsilanti, Mich., on Saturday, November 4. Finishing the weekend strong for the Spartans was Josh Geschwendt with his first-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.18.
"We did a good job here tonight," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "The kids did a good job accomplishing everything that we wanted to heading into the meet. We have a little work a head of us, but I am sure we will be fine. I am pretty happy with the way things happened this weekend."
Day two opened with the 200-yard medley relay. In the men's heat, Michael Uggeri, Jason Lintjer, Josh Geschwendt and Sam Schulze placed third overall with a time of 1:32.25. The women's team of Brooke Telander, Sarah Falconer, Laura Leslie and Morgan Piasecki finished in 1:48.27 for ninth place.
The 400-yard IM saw the men claim spots fourth through sixth. Nick Roberts led with his time of 4:01.13 followed by Drew Goins (4:09.09) and Brad Gillilan (4:09.25). Sarah Falconer was the top female with her eighth-place time of 4:26.39.
Michael Uggeri claimed third in the 100-yard butterfly with a 50.18 mark while Josh Geschwendt was fourth with his 50.34 time.
Jason Austerman edged his brother, Jacob Austerman, in the 200-yard freestyle as he turned in a time of 1:43.15, good enough for fourth. Jacob Austerman was sixth with a time of 1:44.02.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Jason Lintjer was the top male swimmer with his third-place finish. Lintjer turned in a time of 56.98. Cameron Bartlett also finished in the top-10 for MSU as he was seventh, clocking in at 58.34.
Sam Schulze placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke when he clocked in at 52.18.
Saturday's morning session concluded with the 800 freestyle relays. Nick Roberts, Josh Geschwendt, Mark Gammell and Drew Goins combined to finish third with a time of 6:59.61. Whitney Woodbridge, Sarah Falconer, Lauren Baisden and Rachael Wilson comprised MSU's team that placed seventh (7:52.41).
In the men's three-meter board, Bryce Beyer placed fourth with a score of 264.70. Beyer was sixth in the one-meter, recording a score of 250.70. Brian Akers joined Beyer with his eighth-place mark of 222.20. Ashley Borgman placed seventh in the women's one-meter board with a 239.00 mark. Borgman was also fifth in the three-meter with a score of 277.45.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Sam Schulze, Jason Lintjer, Nick Roberts and Josh Geschwendt placed third with a time of 1:24.22. Samantha Hilk, Morgan Piasecki, Lauren Daugherty and Brooke Telander finished their event fourth overall, clocking in at 1:35.79.
In the 500-yard freestyle, the men placed four members in the top-10 overall. Leading all Spartans in second was Jason Austerman with his time of 4:32.55. Brad Gillilan was third (4:34.27) while Jacob Austerman was fifth (4:38.27). Drew Goins rounded out the MSU swimmers in ninth (4:42.97). Whitney Woodbridge was ninth on the women's side with a 5:07.56 mark.
Placing second in the 200-yard IM was Nick Roberts. Roberts finished in 1:52.39.
Brooke Telander swam to a sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.01.
In the final event of weekend, Michael Uggeri, Jason Lintjer, Josh Geschwendt and Sam Schulze were third in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:26.31. MSU's quad of Mark Gammell, Cameron Bartlett, Sean Costello and Jason Austerman finished sixth in the event with a 3:22.84 mark.
After placing 12th in the preliminary heats, Kevin Puskaric concluded action at the 2010 AT&T Short Course National Championships with a sixth-place showing in the B final of the 200-yard breaststroke. Puskaric finished in 1:59.70 for 16th overall.
The Spartans will host Ball State on Saturday, November 11 for the final competition before Christmas break. Swimming is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
