Swimming & Diving Opens EMU Invite Strong

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving team opened action today at the EMU Invite in Ypsilanti, Mich. in strong fashion. After the first 14 events of action, the men sit in second overall while the women are seventh.
"We swam pretty good," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We came in with a set of goals for the weekend, and we were able to accomplish roughly 70-percent of those tonight. Hopefully we will be able to get done everything else we are looking to accomplish this weekend at Eastern Michigan."
The meet got started on a high not for MSU as Brad Gillilan took home first-place honors in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:54.48. On the women's side, Whitney Woodbridge finished sixth, clocking in at 17:29.26.
Mark Gammell placed fourth in the 200 backstroke with a 1:52.75 mark. Michael Uggeri was sixth in the event (1:53.51) while Brian Rockwell was eighth (1:54.84). Rachael Wilson was the top female in the event with her ninth-place time of 2:05.80.
Josh Geschwendt turned in a second-place mark of 45.93 in the 100 freestyle. Sam Schulze was eighth in the event with a time of 46.83.
In the 200 breaststroke, the men occupied positions sixth through eighth. Nick Roberts led the way (2:05.24) following by Jason Lintjer (2:05.94) and Cameron Bartlett (2:07.00).
In the final individual event of the night, the 200 butterfly, Michael Uggeri was the top male swimmer, placing third in 1:52.66. Drew Goins was seventh (1:54.44) and Sean Costello was 10th (1:55.39). Lauren Baisden placed 10th in the women's race with a time of 2:08.34.
The 400 freestyle relay was the last event of the night. The team of Lauren Daugherty, Laura Leslie, Kristin O'Connor and Morgan Piasecki placed eighth with a time of 3:32.60. The men's team of Jason Lintjer, Sam Schulze, Nick Roberts and Josh Geschwendt clocked in with a time of 3:06.57, good enough for fourth.
Diving results for the women's three-meter and the men's one-meter board events are not currently available.
Kevin Puskaric placed 27th in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2010 AT&T Short Course National Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Out of 57 competitors, Puskaric turned in a finals time of 55.13 in the C finals.
Action continues tomorrow at both the EMU Invite and the Short Course National Championships.
