Swimming & Diving Opens Action at Georgia Tech Invite

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Michigan State swimming and diving team opened day one of the Georgia Tech Invitational in strong fashion. Jacob Jarzen pulled in the top individual finish for the Spartans with his fourth-place time of 1:49.30in the 200 yard IM.
"We swam pretty well today," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We were able to record a couple B-cut standards, which will certainly help us as we continue the season. Overall, it was a good opening day and I certainly look forward to seeing what the next two days bring out of the team."
The meet opened strong for MSU as the 200 free relay team of Tori Merritt, Summer Strickler, Kerry Sodonis and Jenny Rusch placed ninth with a time of 1:35.72. The men's team of Brandon Williams, Bryan Williams, Nick McGowan and Mark Schramm also finished strong with a time of 1:23.32, good enough for sixth place.
Colby Ward reeled in a sixth-place finish in the 500 free with a NCAA B-cut standard time of 4:26.81. Placing ninth in the event was Pat Falconer with a time of 4:32.34.
In the three-meter dive, Sarah Clay turned in a 10th-place showing with a score of 294.65, while Ivan Zalessov was 12th with a 298.00 mark.
The 400 medley relay closed out the meet for MSU in strong fashion. The women's team of Alex Pierce, Kerry Sodonis, Becca Ebner and Tori Merritt finished eighth with a time of 3:49.31.
The men's team of Nick McGowan, Kevin Puskaric, Jacob Jarzen and Bryan Williams was fourth with a 3:19.22 mark.
Nick McGowan also placed second in a 50 free swim-off with a time of 21.30.
MSU returns to action tomorrow (Nov. 19) with day two of the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
