Gymnastics Signs Two to National Letters of Intent

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages announced Tuesday that two student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Michigan State next fall and compete for the 2011-12 Spartan gymnastics team. The signees include Alina Cartwright (Naperville, Ill., Legacy Elite) and Ashley Stevenson (Wildomar, Calif., SCEGA).
"The combination of these two athletes is just what we need to enhance our team and program. Alina is a powerhouse type gymnast who is very strong and has a dynamic vault, along with awesome tumbling. Ashley is more of a finesse gymnast who has a great swing quality about her bar work, and is very solid on the balance beam."

Prior to Michigan State: Attends Neuqua Valley High School with an expected graduation date of June 2011 ... Competed at Legacy Elite under the direction of Jiani and Yuejiu Wu ... Competed Level 10 in 2010 ... Finished eighth in the all-around, third on the floor and sixth on the vault at the 2010 Junior Olympic Nationals ... Won the vault at the 2010 regionals, to originally earn an alternate spot for the Junior Olympic Nationals ... Placed first on the vault and third on the floor at the 2010 state championships ... Competed Level 9 in 2007, 2008 and 2009 ... Finished first on the vault and third in the all-around at the 2009 state championships ... At the 2009 regionals, placed first on the beam, floor and in the all-around ... Won the vault and the all-around crown at Level 9 Easterns.

Prior to Michigan State: Will graduate from Elsinore High School in June 2011 ... Competed at Legacy Southern California Elite Gymnastics Academy under the direction of Meredith Paulicivic ... Finished 32nd at the 2010 Junior Olympic Nationals, competing Level 10 ... Won the beam and placed fourth in the all-around at the state championships in 2010 ... Won the bars and finished seventh in the all-around at the 2010 regionals ... Competed Level 9 in 2008 and 2009 ... Placed first on the bars and the all-around at the 2009 State Championships ... Placed second on both the vault and the floor at Regionals in 2009 ... Competed Level 8 in 2007 ... Placed second on the bars, beam and all-around at the 2007 state championships ... Won the bars and the floor at the 2007 regionals.
Personal: Born July 26, 1993 in Downey, Calif. ... Daughter of Matthew Stevenson and Tammy Lentz ... Plans on majoring in kinesiology.
