MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Michigan State gymnastics team (5-2, 1-2 Big Ten) traveled to Minneapolis, Minn. for its third-consecutive road meet, when it faced the Golden Gophers on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Sports Pavilion. Minnesota downed the Spartans, 195.350-193.350. Highlighting the Spartans performance was junior Kelsey Morley (Elkhart, Ind.), who tied for first in the beam and finished second in the all-around.
Senior Rochelle Robinson (Chesapeake, Va.) led all competitors on the vault as she won the event with a score of 9.850. Kendra Elm of Minnesota finished second with a mark of 9.800. Junior Nicole Argiros (Livonia, Mich.), and Lucy Ennis and Yuri Nagai, each of Minnesota, posted scores of 9.750 to finish tied for third. The Gophers topped the Spartans as a team on the vault by a score of 48.700 to 48.650.
Robinson was the top finisher for the Spartans on the bars with a mark of 9.825. Jamie Bullock, Kendra Elm and Alexis Russell of Minnesota each tied for first with scores of 9.850. Minnesota defeated MSU on the bars by a score of 49.025 to 48.125.
Morley finished tied for first on the beam with Bullock of Minnesota with a score of 9.850. Senior Nicole Curler (Bay City, Mich.) finished tied for third with Kristin Furukawa and Russell with marks of 9.800. The Green and White downed the Gophers by a score of 48.850 to 48.650.
Curler posted a score of 9.825 to finish tied for second with Kendra Elm of Minnesota on the floor. Russel was the top finisher on the event with a mark of 9.900. MSU lost 48.975-47.725 on the floor to Minnesota.
In the all-around, Morley was the top finisher for the Spartans with her score of 38.400 to place second. Robinson, who competed in the all-around for the first time since the 2008 season, finished third with a score of 38.275. Russell of Minnesota was the top finisher with a mark of 39.250.
The Spartans will return home next weekend, Saturday, Jan. 30, for the first time in three meets when they entertain Ohio State in the yearly "Flip for a Cure" meet. Action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Jenison Field House. A signed guitar donated by Grammy Award winning artist Melissa Etheridge will be auctioned off as part of the event. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
