
Men's Golf Finishes Third at 2009 Spartan Classic

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team hosted the second-annual Spartan Classic this weekend at The Kingsley Club in Kingsley, Mich., finishing the 54-hole event in a tie for third with a team score of 11-over par 863 (291-290-282). Senior Jack Newman paced the Spartans, tallying a 2-under par 211 970-69-72) to place seventh.

California took home the team title, posting an impressive 16-under par 836 (281-276-279) to top the field by 10 strokes. UC Davis took second with a 6-under 846 (278-278-290), while San Francisco tied MSU at 11-over 863 (283-285-295) for third. Detroit rounded out the top-five at 12-over 864 (281-285-298).
California also had the top two individual scores, as Eric Mina topped teammate Stephen Hale by two shots over the weekend. Mina, the lone golfer to post three under-par rounds, carded a winning score of 10-under 203 (67-67-69).
Joining Newman among the top-20 individuals for Michigan State was senior Andrew Ladwig and sophomore Chris Mory, who tied for 14th, and sophomore Dan Ellis, who played as an individual and tied for 18th. Ladwig (71-76-68) and Mory (72-73-70) both posted 2-over 215, while Ellis was a stroke behind at 3-over 216 (72-66-78). Frehsman James Ross was 31st with a 9-over 222 (78-72-72).
Sophomore Jimmy Dewling rounded out the Spartans competitive squad, tying for 57th at 21-over 234 (78-79-77). Also competing this weekend, all as individuals, were freshmen Will Morris and Chenai Mushiri, and redshirt junior Derrick Williams. Morris tied for 60th at 22-over 235 (78-76-81), while Williams, making his MSU debut after transferring from Cleveland State, was 66th at 29-over 242 (86-74-82) and Mushiri, also playing his first tournament in greeen and white, was tied for 68th at 34-over 247 (83-82-82).
The Spartans final round score of 2-under 282 was the second lowest score of the day.
MSU returns to action on Oct 5-6 for the Rees Jones Intercollegiate in Daufuskie Island, S.C.
