EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State gymnastics team was recognized this week by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) for having the third-highest grade point average (GPA) in the nation this year with a 3.65 composite team mark. In addition, eight Spartan gymnasts were named Scholar All-Americans for having a GPA of 3.5 or better during the 2008-09 academic year.
"Each and every team member has contributed to this academic ranking," said head coach Kathie Klages. "I am so proud of the accomplishments of these amazing young women. They manage to balance four hour a day practices with their academic demands and still manage to enjoy their collegiate experience."
Katlyn Roggensack and Megan Bergland, who were among the 67 gymnastics student-athletes to compile a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year, headlined the Spartans who earned Scholar All-America honors. Joining the pair were Kelsey Morley (3.94), Kelly Moffitt (3.91), Emily Lopatofsky (3.88), Nicole Heikkila (3.67), Selina Rodriguez (3.60) and Nicole Argiros (3.52). Roggensack received the award for the fourth time, while Bergland and Moffitt are three-time honorees, Heikkila, Lopatofsky and Morley earn it for the second-straight season, and Argiros and Rodriguez are first time recipients.
With this year's eight selections, a total of 86 Spartans have garnered Scholar All-America recognition in Klages' 19 years at the helm of the program.
Southeast Missouri State University earned the National Academic Team Championship with a 3.91, followed by Southern Utah with a 3.68. Michigan State ranks among the top-five in the nation for the second consecutive year, having been fourth in 2007-08.
