EUGENE, Ore. - Michigan State freshman thrower Lonnie Pugh (Grosse Ile, Mich.) placed 10th overall in the discus at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior National Championships on Saturday (June 27) at Hayward Field on the campus of Oregon. His throw of 52.91m (173-3) ranked him as the fourth-best collegiate athlete in the event, featuring the top athletes from around the nation. Pugh fouled on each of his first two attempts but came back with a toss of 52.91m (173-3) on his final attempt of the competition.
Pugh also competed in the hammer throw at the event where he fouled on each of this three attempts.
Lisa Senakiewich (Davison, Mich.), who competed in her final collegiate meet at the NCAA Championships earlier this month, also ran for the Spartans. Looking for a berth to the World Championships, Senakiewich ran in the women's 1,500m run as part of the USATF National Championships. She clocked a personal-best time of 4:19.34, earning her 19th overall at the competition. Senakiewich was one of only nine collegiate runners to participate in the women's 1,500m run at the meet.
Former Spartan Nicole Bush (Wyoming, Mich.) was also on hand at the meet, taking part in the USATF National Championships as well. Looking to earn a bid to the World Championships in Brelin, Germany, later this summer, Bush competed in the 3,000m steeplechase. After placing sixth with a time of 9:57.06 in the preliminary heat on Friday (June 26), Bush had to withdraw from the event finals after suffering an injury in the qualifying heat. Despite running injured for the final 2,000m of the heat, Bush still managed to place sixth and qualify for the event finals. Colorado's Jennifer Barringer won the steeplechase with a time of 9:29.38 on Sunday (June 29).
