KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan got two runs in the eighth inning and snapped the Michigan State baseball team's four-game winning streak, downing MSU 5-4, on Wednesday (April 10) afternoon in Kalamazoo.
With the score 1-0 WMU in the top of the second inning, the Spartans' Jeff Holm singled in Eric Roof to knot the game at one. Western retook the lead in the bottom of the second when a double to deep left field by Kyle Galbraith drove in a run.
Chris Roberts led off the top of the fourth with a single to center field. A wild pitch and heads-up base running allowed Roberts to get to third and he eventually scored courtesy of Roof sacrifice fly, tying the game at two.
The back-and-forth game continued after the Broncos again put up a solo run in the sixth and the Spartans responded to tie it at three in the seventh with a Johnny Lee single.
The Spartans took their first lead of the game in the eighth when Holm picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field to put MSU up 4-3.
With two down in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Broncos capitalized on two MSU errors and scored twice to go ahead for good, 5-4.
Michigan State (11-18) heads to Columbus, Ohio this weekend for a three-game series with Ohio State. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday (April 10) at 6:05 p.m.
