COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State pitcher Alex Wimmers held the Michigan State baseball team to a season-low two hits as the Spartans fell, 6-1, to the Buckeyes in game one of a three-game set on Friday evening (April 10) in Columbus, Ohio.
The Buckeyes' Zach Hurley put OSU on the board early with a solo shot in the bottom of the first to give OSU 1-0 lead.
With Wimmers facing the minimum through 3.2 innings, the Spartans got their first runner on base when Eli Boike walked in the fourth and later stole second to move into the scoring position. However Wimmers was able to get Chris Roberts to ground out and end the threat and keep the Spartans hitless.
The Buckeyes put up another solo run in the sixth and then a Dan Burkhart three-run home run stretched OSU's lead to 5-0 in the seventh inning.
With Wimmers no-hitter in tact through 7.0 innings, Eric Roof got the Spartans' first hit of the day when he led off the eighth inning with a double to right field. A two-out bunt by Jeff Holm got Roof over to third and he later scored on a Wimmers balk to put MSU on the board.
In his first start since throwing a no-hitter last weekend, Spartan starter Nolan Moody went 6.1 innings, scattered seven hits, gave up four earned runs and fanned three. A.J. Dunn pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief and struck out one.
Wimmers pitched a complete game and finished with 11 Ks for the Buckeyes.
The two teams will play again on Saturday (April 11) at Bill Davis Stadium with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m.
