EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer junior goalkeeper Avery Steinlage and junior defender Colin Givens were each named to the NSCAA Great Lakes All-Region Team. Steinlage garnered first-team honors while Givens was named to the second team.
Steinlage, a two-time All-Big Ten first-team selection, ended the regular season as the conference leader in goals-against average. Earlier this season, he set the NCAA shutout streak record at 1,318:26 - surpassing the old mark by over 340:00. He will enter the 2010 season in sole possession of fifth place on the MSU all-time shutout list with 17.
"Avery had a good year statistically, and it is nice to see him get recognized for another very solid year in goal," said MSU head coach Damon Rensing. "It's certainly also a credit to the defense in front of him as well, and it's another step for Avery to try and better himself as a goalkeeper."
Givens, a second-team All-Big Ten honoree, was the leader of the Spartans' defense this season. The co-captain started 18 of MSU's 21 games on the backline, missing three matches due to injury.
"I am happy for Colin because he is one of those players that doesn't get a lot of recognition, but was so consistent for us on the backline," said Rensing. "He has been one of the better defenders in the conference this year and this honor substantiates that."
"I hope these honors give each of them even more confidence heading into next year," Rensing said.
