EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams closed out competition at the TYR Invitational on Sunday (Nov. 22) with the men's team taking first place overall with 970.5 points. The Spartan women's team took second as host Northwestern claimed first place.
"We had some very good performances this weekend, but we also know we have a lot to work on," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "There are certainly some things we have to improve on to get better for later in the season, but we swam well."
Freshman Jacob Jarzen continued his excellent weekend performance, winning the 200 backstroke with a 1:46.82 - nearly setting a new school record.
The Spartan men also got strong performances from their seniors as Joe Schmitt (46.07) and Sho Koba (46.12) placed second and third, respectively, in the 100 freestyle. Koba placed third in the 50 butterfly with a 22.37.
In the men's 200 breaststroke, kevin Puskaric placed first with a 2:00.62 - winning the event by over two seconds. Puskaric also won the 100 breaststroke on Saturday.
Stephanie Fisher was MSU's top female placer on Sunday as she clocked a 26.79 in the 50 backstroke to claim first place.
Kerry Sodonis swam a 2:21.53 in the 200 breaststroke to take fourth place in the event.
With first place already wrapped up, the Spartan men closed out the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay as Jon LaRocque, Schmitt, Garrett Ruhland and Koba combined for a time of 3:01.65.
The Spartans will next return to action at the U.S. Short Course Nationals in Federal Way, Wash., and at the Calvin College Invitational in Grand Rapids. Both events take place Dec. 3-5.
