EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed day one of the TYR Invitational on Friday (Nov. 20). After 14 events, the men's team stands in first place over second place, and host school, Northwestern, 265-222. With 208 points, the women's team ended day one in third place behind Northwestern (414 points) and Iowa State (216).
"We had a solid session today," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Jenny Rusch and Jacob Jarzen had our two best swims of the day. We were solid today, not great, and hope to turn it up tomorrow."
Jarzen, a freshman, turned in a 1:51.09 in the 200 IM to take second place overall. Rusch, also a true freshman, swam the ninth-fastest time in school history in the 50 free, clocking a 23.45, to take third place.
The Spartan divers got off to a good start for MSU in the three-day invitational as Sarah Clay (283.00) and Kayla Kalmbach (280.00) took second and third place, respectively, on the three-meter board. Ivan Zalessov led the men's effort - taking first on the one-meter board with a 303.65. Brian Akers' 262.70 was good enough for third place.
In the final events of the day, the MSU women's and men's 400 medley relay teams each placed in the top three. The women's team of Stephanie Fisher, Kerry Sodonis, Becca Ebner and Rusch clocked a 3:46.89 - good for third place. Jon LaRocque, kevin Puskaric, Joe Schmitt and Jarzen took first with a 3:18.58.
Competition will resume tomorrow with the prelims beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
