
Swimming and Diving Sweeps Grand Valley State

JENISON, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams each defeated Grand Valley State on Friday night (Nov. 13) - by identical scores, 140-103. It was the first action in three weeks for both Spartan squads.
"We started slow start in the beginning of tonight's meet, but we ended up swimming pretty well," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We had some pretty good swims, overall."
Friday's meet was held at Jenison High School.
"There was a great crowd here tonight," Gianiodis said. "Jenison did a great job of promoting the meet and the Grand Rapids community showed a lot of support and we are very appreciative of that."
MSU's Ivan Zalessov dominated the diving events for the men, winning both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. Zalessov posted a 331.95 on the one-meter and a 362.17 on the three-meter platform. Fellow Spartan David Garry took second in both competitions.
On the women's side, Sarah Clay led a Spartan sweep of the top three spots in the three meter with a 358.13. Kayla Kalmbach (279.67) and Ashley Borgman (269.47) in second and third place, respectively. Kalmbach took first on the one-meter board with a 286.12.
Freshman Jacob Jarzen won his first collegiate race when he touched the wall first with a 1:55.47 in the 200 IM. Fellow MSU rookie Alex Pierce placed first in the women's 200 IM with a 2:09.45.
Other Spartan women that claimed first-place finishes on the day included Kerry Sodonis in the 200 freestyle (1:55.91), Becca Ebner in the 200 butterfly (2:05.35) and Stephanie Fisher in the 200 backstroke (2:05.42).
For the men, Ricky Forrest won the 1,000 free with a 9:46.92, joining Joe Schmitt in the 200 freestyle (1:43.16), Mark Schramm in the 500 free (4:42.89) and kevin Puskaric in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.17) as other Spartans to pick up first-place finishes.
Both the men's and women's teams will get back into action Nov. 20-22 at the TYR Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
