Newman Ties for Second at UNCG Bridgestone

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Jack Newman posted his best finish of the season this weekend, tying for second at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate, hosted at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Newman matched his career low 54-hole score, carding a 10-under 206 (67-69-70). As a team, the Spartans placed eighth at 7-over par 871 (286-284-301).

Newman finished one shot behind Virginia's Amory Davis, after his 2-under par 70 today. He added four more birdies to bring his total to 16 for the weekend, including birdieing the par-4, 5th hole in all three rounds. It was his third top-10 finish in the first five tournaments of the season, and his 14th in his career. Newman's three round total matched his previous collegiate low set as a freshman at the Fossum Invitational.
Freshman James Ross was second for the Spartans, tying for 53rd at 8-over 224 (67-81-76). Senior Andrew Ladwig (75-75-77) and sophomore Dan Ellis (77-71-79) were part of a group tied at 11-over in 64th-place. Sophomore Chris Mory wrapped up the MSU golfers in competition, tying for 74th at 14-over 230 (83-69-78). Ross, Ellis and Mory each totaled eight birdies, while Ladwig holed seven.
Georgia Tech came from behind to claim the team title, shooting a tournament record 21-under 843. The Yellow Jackets finished seven shots ahead of Virginia and 10 strokes better than third-place Michigan.
The Spartans wrap up action for the fall season and will return to action on Feb. 12-13 for the Big Ten Match Play Championship.
