LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 66 Michigan State women's tennis team fell to No. 10 USC, 4-0, at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. in the opening-round of the ITA Indoor Kickoff Weekend. Three of the matches were suspended, giving USC the sweep. The winner of the tournament will automatically qualify for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. USC marked the first top-10 ITA ranked opponent for the Spartans this season.
"Some of us competed very hard today," said Michigan State head coach Simone Jardim. "USC is one of the best teams in the country and we are not at that level yet. We hope to work our way towards that level as the seasons goes on."
The Spartans saw a strong performance at the No. 1 doubles position as sophomores Manon Noe (Liancourt, France) and Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.) were tied at six against the No. 31 doubles tandem of Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu before play was suspended.
"Manon and Whiney played and competed very well together today," said Jardim. "I was really happy with how they came out and fought hard against a tough Fink and Niculescu."
The Spartans return to action Sunday, February 1, at Marks Stadium for the ITA Kickoff Weekend consolation match against No. 60 Saint Mary's College.
