EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team fell to New Mexico Friday (Sept. 5) night in the first game of a two-game road trip. The loss drops the Spartans to 1-2 while New Mexico improves to 2-0-1.
After missing the first two games of the season with an injury, senior Louis Stephens III wasted little time in making his presence known. Stephens gave the Spartans an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when he beat New Mexico goalkeeper Eric Staver with a shot from the top of the box. Zac Scaffidi picked up the lone assist on the goal.
However, the Lobos responded just over three minutes later to tie the game at one and then stunned the Spartans by scoring two goals in a two minute span midway through the first half to jump out to a 3-1 lead.
After hitting the post in the 62nd minute, Doug DeMartin cut the deficit in half with a nice individual effort when he beat Staver one-on-one for his third goal of the season. The Spartans pressured the Lobos from then, out-shooting them 4-2 in the final 28 minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net.
MSU will remain in New Mexico, taking on UC-Davis, Sunday (Sept. 7) at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
