VICTORIA, B.C. - Michigan State diver Danielle Williams (Dorchester, Ontario) placed seventh in the open three-meter finals at the Canadian Diving Olympic Trials, which took place June 22 in Victoria, British Columbia. She finished just 0.20 points behind Veronique Lemieux for sixth place.
Williams, who will enter her fifth year at MSU in the fall, scored 514.50 over the course of five dives. In international diving competitions, divers complete five dives. In NCAA events, there are six dives.
"We're very happy with the results at the Olympic Trials," MSU diving coach Eric Best said. "We're happy, but we're not surprised. We always have high expectations for Danielle, and she continues to reach her goals."
Just two divers from the field qualified for the Olympic Games. Blythe Hartley, who is ranked fifth in the world in springboard diving, won the event with a score of 751.95. Jennifer Abel also punched her ticket to Beijing, scoring 679.45 to finish second.
Williams totaled 765.90 to finish ninth in three-meter competition at the Canadian Senior Nationals in March. That competition, which was the Olympic Trials qualifier, consisted of 15 dives over multiple days.
The 2008 Olympic Games will take place August 8-24 in Beijing, China.
