Track & Field Completes First Day at the Gina Relays

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Michigan State track & field team finished its first day of competition at the Gina Relays, hosted by Hillsdale College on Saturday afternoon. Senior Jason Brown finished first in the shot put for the fourth-consecutive meet, tossing a regional-qualifying mark of 17.31m (56-9 1/2).
The MSU women dominated the 5000m run, finishing three athletes in the top-five. Senior Lisa Senakiewich placed first in the event, coming in with a regional-qualifying time of 16:35.00, more than 16 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Michigan State's Emily MacLeod, also claimed a regional-qualifying finish of 16:51.62, to place second. In addition to Senakiewich and MacLeod, freshman Emily Langenberg rounded out the top five in the 5000m run, placing fifth with a time of 17:16.71.
Senior Meagan Halliwill had another solid performance in the hammer throw, finishing third with a toss of 56.04m (183-10), and freshman Ashley Lawrence placed sixth in the shot put, finishing with a distance of 13.59m (44-7).
Senior Jackie Walton paced the sprints team, as she came in sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.34.
On the men's side, senior Dustin Voss finished fifth with a regional-qualifying time of 9:02.53 in the 3000m steeplechase.
The men throws team made its presence felt on Saturday afternoon as Kyle Strotbaum placed ninth in the hammer throw (54.40m/178-10), while sophomore Anthony Agrusa came in 11th with a throw of 53.90m (176-10).
Along with Brown, sophomore Brent McCarrick came in eighth in the shot put with a distance of 15:01m (49-3).
MSU continues competition tomorrow as events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the men's pole vault.
