LANSING, Mich. - An eight-run top of the second inning sparked Iowa to a 16-2 victory over the Michigan State baseball team Friday night at Oldsmobile Park. The Hawkeyes collected 20 hits, led by Matt Mossey's 4-for-4 effort. Brock Alberts pitched eight innings for the win. Sophomore Chris Roberts had two hits and scored a run to lead the Spartans.
Leading 2-0 after one inning, Iowa strung together three straight hits to lead off the second inning. After three runs had scored in the inning, Wes Freie hit a two-run single to right to make it a 7-0 game. A Mossey RBI single put another run on the board before a two-run triple by T.J. Cataldo gave the Hawkeyes a 10-0 lead.
Seven different Hawkeyes had two hits apiece. Freie had four RBI and Kody McManis drove in three runs.
Alberts scattered seven hits, allowing one earned run and he struck out three. Patrick Schatz pitched the ninth for Iowa. Senior Brandon Doherty tripled with one out in the bottom of the third. He would score on a double down the right-field line by senior Steve Gerstenberger.
Iowa (16-22, 6-11 Big Ten) scored two more runs in the fourth and another in the sixth to take a 13-1 lead. Zach McCool and Freie each had an RBI to put the Hawkeyes ahead 15-1 after eight.
Trailing 16-1, MSU wouldn't go down without a fight. With one out, Roberts tripled off the wall in left-center, his team-high fourth three-bagger of the season. The next batter, senior Dennis Jones, lofted a fly ball into the right-field corner to score Roberts.
Senior Chris Cullen (4-2) took the loss for Michigan State (14-22, 4-12 Big Ten). He allowed 10 runs over three innings. Sophomore Kyle Corcoran pitched five innings and freshman Seth Williams worked the top of the ninth for the Spartans.
The same two teams will play a 2:05 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, April 26 at Oldsmobile Park.
