EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State gymnastics team competed in its annual Green & White Meet on Dec. 7, in preparation for the upcoming 2009 season.
The White team, led by senior Dani Fanning, juniors Kelly Moffitt and Nicole Curler, sophomores Nicole Argiros and Elise Craig, and freshmen Alyssa Brennan and Jackie Berg, came out on top with a score of 116.375. Scores were compiled from the top-three scores from each team, instead of the normal top-five tallies which is used in a regular season meet. The Green squad, consisting of senior Katlyn Roggensack, juniors Emily Lopatofsky and Rochelle Robinson, sophomores Kathryn Mahoney, Kelsey Morley and Nicole Heikkila, and freshman Selina Rodriguez placed second with a team score of 115.600.
Lopatofsky was the meet's all-around champion with a score of 38.600. In the other events, Curler won the vault and beam with a score of 9.85 for both, Argiros took the bars (9.75), and Berg and Fanning took the floor title with a 9.70.
After the competition, the top-five scores from both teams were combined for a final score of 193.900. The Spartans scored 48.85 on the vault, 48.325 on the bars, 48.375 on the beam and 48.35 in the floor exercise.
"I am really pleased with the way things went today, especially with this meet being the day before exam week," said Head Coach Kathie Klages. "I feel this team is further ahead than previous teams have been and their score today of 193.900 truly showed that. I am looking forward to a great season."
Michigan State was ranked 17th nationally in the 2008 GymInfo Preseason Coaches poll. The ranking is the second-highest since 1998, when the Spartans were ranked 16th. Nine of the Spartans 2009 opponents are ranked in the preseason poll, including five Big Ten teams.
The Spartans begin the 2009 season with a home quad-meet on Friday, Jan. 9 against Illinois, Michigan and Western Michigan. Competition at Jenison Field House is expected to start at 7 p.m., with a televised tape delay on the Big Ten Network.
