EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four Spartan swimmers and divers were recognized by the conference office today as Big Ten Swimmers and Divers of the Week. Swimmers Joe Schmitt and Heather Kiluk along with divers David Garry and Danielle Williams all received the weekly conference honor.
Schmitt, a junior, picked up his first-ever win in the 100-yard backstroke against Ball State last Saturday (Dec. 13) with a time of 57.95. He also posted his fastest time of the year (2:11.43) in the 200 breaststroke in helping the Spartans to a win over the Cardinals. He is the first Spartan to earn the award since his brother, Adam, in January 2008.
Kiluk picked up first-place finishes in the 200 butterfly (2:06.19) and 500 freestyle (5:03.65) en route to MSU's women's team's victory over Ball State. A product of Libertyville, Ill., her 200 fly time was team's second fastest of the season. It is Kiluk's first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week laurel.
On the boards, Williams picked up her fourth-career Big Ten Diver of the Week honor after collecting two first-place finishes against Ball State. Her 300.45 on the one-meter and 329.34 on the three-meter both qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Meet in March.
Garry, a junior, picked up his first-career Big Ten Diver of the Week accolade after taking first on the one-meter (311.10) and three-meter (336.90). His three-meter score was a career best and both dives qualified him for the NCAA Zone Diving Meet. The last male Spartan diver to win the award was Ivan Zalessov in December 2007.
