EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Michigan State gymnastics team was ranked 17th in the preseason coaches poll released by GymInfo earlier this week. This is the second-straight year the Spartans have been ranked in the preseason poll, as they were No. 22 in 2007. The ranking is also the second-highest since 1998, when the Spartans were ranked 16th.
Nine of the Spartans 2009 opponents are ranked in the preseason poll, including five Big Ten teams. Michigan State opens the 2009 season on Jan. 9 at home with a 7 p.m. quad-meet with Illinois, Michigan and Western Michigan. The meet will be televised via tape delay on the Big Ten Network.
The Spartans return 11 letterwinners from the 2009 squad that placed third at the NCAA West Regional and finished fourth in the Big Ten Championships. Junior Rochelle Robinson (Chesapeake, Va.) returns after competing at the NCAA Championships for the second-straight season.
