EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State tennis seniors Nick Rinks (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) and Adam Monich (Ann Arbor, Mich./Heritage Academy) are ranked among the country's top tennis players, according to rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Rinks and Monich are ranked 14th in the nation in doubles while Rinks appears in the singles rankings at No. 32.
Rinks and Monich played together 21 times last season, posting a 15-6 record that included a 4-1 mark versus the Big Ten and three wins against nationally-ranked opponents. The duo won its first four matches last fall at the ITA Midwest Regional in Minneapolis and has combined for a 37-19 record over the past two seasons. Rinks and Monich were ranked 41st in last year's preseason rankings.
Rinks, a two-time All-Big Ten selection, appears in the national singles rankings for the second straight year after being charted at No. 77 in the preseason rankings in 2006. The Kalamazoo, Mich., native went 25-10 last season and became the fourth player in MSU history to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships. He finished last season 62nd on the national charts and defeated five nationally-ranked opponents. His win over 52nd-ranked Matko Maravic last spring earned him Big Ten Player of the Week accolades on March 18.
"Nick and Adam have achieved a lot over the past three years, and that's why they get the respect of being in the national rankings," head coach Gen Orlando said. "Hopefully, they can build on this and take their games to another level this year."
The Michigan State men's tennis team begins its fall season at the Tom Fallon Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Sept 28.
