BELLEVILLE, Mich. - Michigan State's rowing team opened its fall season Sunday morning against Michigan and Eastern Michigan on Belleville Lake. The crews split into two flights and each competed in five races.
Each of the five pieces lasted four and a half minutes with a maximum stroke rating of 26 strokes per minute, which shortened the span of each race to roughly 1,200 meters rather than the customary 2,000-meter race.
Each program raced two boats in the first flight. The Wolverines and Spartans competed evenly in all five races, trading first place in each race. The Eagle crews were consistently in fifth and sixth.
The second flight included a Spartan eight and a Michigan four and eight. MSU's eight won all five pieces by open water.
State returns to Belleville Lake for its next rowing event, competing against Michigan and Ohio State Saturday, Sept. 29.
