EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomore Jonathon Allen and junior Nicole Bush received Second-Team All-Big Ten honors, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Both Allen and Bush had second-place finishes in the triple jump and the 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, at last weekend's Big Ten Outdoor Championships held at Penn State.
All-Big Ten honors were earned by athletes that finished in the top-two places at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in their respective events.
Allen finished in second place in the triple jump on Sunday afternoon. The Lansing native broke his own school record with a personal-best 15.87 meter (52-1) leap. During the outdoor season, the sophomore notched two first-place performances in the event at the EMU Invitational (4/21) and the Spartan Invitational (4/14).
"Jon did a great job this winter of regrouping and making progress," director of track and field and cross country Walt Drenth said. "After an indoor season where he didn't do as well as he would've liked, he learned to rise to the occasion and learn from his mistakes. He's a young guy and he's only been triple jumping for two years now, so to perform like he did is a great accomplishment."
Bush earned her first All-Big Ten honor for the outdoor season after finishing second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:03.89, after being named All-American in 2006 for the same event. The Wyoming, Mich., native ran in only three (1,500m, 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m) races this year and qualified for NCAA Regionals in all three races.
"Nicole is expected to be one of the top finishers," Drenth said. "She struggled after cross country season with injuries and illness and she came back during the outdoor season. I'm proud of her fortitude and her struggle through the frustration to be one of the top athletes in the conference."
The Spartans return to action on May 25-26 for the NCAA Regionals in Columbia, Mo.
