EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior Nick Rinks was selected to the All-Big Ten team, as announced by the conference office on Thursday night. This is the junior's second conference nod - he also earned the same award last year.
"Nick had a great season and he took his game to another level this year," head coach Gene Orlando said. "It is a testament to his talent to be named All-Big Ten for the second year in a row. This year he produced more results and made a steady climb to become a better player. He stepped up in a big way to be one of the top four players in the Big Ten."
The Kalamazoo native currently holds a record of 25-9 and is ranked 63rd in the country according to the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. Rinks finished the spring season with a 9-2 singles record and advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Midwest Regional. In the fall, he led the Spartans with a 16-7 record at the No. 1 singles spot and a 7-2 Big Ten record. The junior posted wins against five ranked players in the spring, with his highest win coming against then-52nd-ranked Matko Maravic of Michigan, for which he earned Big Ten Player of the Week accolades.
Rinks also teamed up with teammate Adam Monich for a majority of the year in doubles. Together they hold a 16-6 record, and completed the Big Ten with a 4-1 record at the No. 1 doubles spot. The duo is currently ranked No. 27 and had wins against then-No. 2 Maravic and Brian Hung of Michigan and then-No. 7 Ryan Keckley and Sheeva Parbhu of Notre Dame.
Rinks is the 21st Spartan to be named All-Big Ten since 1972.
