Wrestling Drops First Dual of Season to Old Dominion

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In his first official dual in the 197-pound weight class, senior captain Joe Williams posted an 11-3 major decision over Old Dominion's 16th-ranked David Mendoza. With the win, Williams sparked a rally for the Spartans, as they tallied wins at heavyweight , 133 and 157, but couldn't hold off the Monarchs, as Old Dominion (1-0) captured the overall win 20-16. Michigan State drops to 0-1.
After the Spartans lost their first three matches to fall behind 9-0 , Williams battled through three periods against Mendoza , posting a takedown in each the first and the second to enter the third ahead, 4-0. From there, the senior tallied three additional takedowns, and allowed only three escapes, to defeat Mendoza 11-3 with the bonus riding time point.
From there, Alan O'Donnell defeated Roy Dragon, 3-2, as the Spartans came within two, 9-7 , in the overall dual. After a technical fall against MSU in 125, No. 10 Franklin Gomez took to the mat at 133, tallying two takedowns in the first period before settling for a scoreless second. In the third period, Gomez escaped Kyle Hutter's hold before forcing a stall point out of Old Dominion. With a final takedown, Gomez clinched the match 8-3, and the Spartans moved closer to the Monarchs at 14-10 .
The Spartans then lost bouts at 141 and 149 before John Fulger wrapped up the dual with the only fall recorded in the evening. Fulger faced off against Dan Rivera at 157 pounds, and just after a minute, the match was over as Fulger stuck Rivera with a cradle for the 1:04 fall. Even with Fulger's six-point victory, Old Dominion managed a win over MSU, 20-16.
Michigan State will continue action on Sunday, Nov. 11, hosting its annual MSU Open in Jenison Field House. Preliminary matches will begin at 9:30 a.m., while medal matches are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. Live scoring will be available at www.msuwrestling.com.
