EAST LANSING, Mich. - Indiana's Lindsay McCarthy scored in the 73rd minute to give the visiting Hoosiers a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Old College Field. The loss, MSU's fourth straight, drops the Spartans to 5-6-1 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Indiana improves to 9-1-2 and 2-0-1 in the Big Ten.
With the match scoreless, McCarthy's took a pass from Christie Kotynski at the 72:54 mark, turned and fired a shot on goal. Her shot ricocheted off the right post and past MSU goalkeeper Nicole Galas, giving the Hoosiers the only tally they would need.
Michigan State controlled play throughout most of the first half, pressuring Indiana and owning a 6-5 edge in shots after the first 45 minutes. However, the Spartans couldn't capitalize.
"We're just in a scoring drought right now," head coach Tom Saxton said. "There were a few stretches where I thought Indiana controlled play, but for the most part I was happy with the way we played."
MSU had a point-blank chance for the equalizer in the match's 88th minute when senior Maureen Pawlak took a cross from sophomore Lauren Hill and put a hard shot on the ball. But the shot ran just to the right of the far post. The play was one of many near-misses for the Spartans.
"We had plenty of good chances," Saxton said. "The chance at the end was basically from the one (yard line)."
Indiana would end up with an 11-10 edge in shots, with four different Hoosiers notching two apiece. Pawlak and freshman Cara Freeman tied for match-high honors with three shots, including two on goal. Galas had four saves in goal for MSU, while Lindsay Hollandsworth stopped six shots for Indiana.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, Oct. 12 at defending Big Ten champion Penn State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
