Green Team Upends White In Swimming Intrasquad

EAST LANSING, Mich.,/b> - The Michigan State swimming & diving season officially got underway with the annual Green & White intrasquad meet Friday evening at Charles McCaffree pool. The White team jumped out to an early lead, but the Green rallied to win the team score, 251-214. Sophomore Joe Schmitt won the 50 and 100 free, senior Adam Schmidt won the 200 free and 200 IM and junior Marlys Fuqua won both distance free events and placed second in the 200 free to lead the Green.
"On a scale of 1-10, I would give tonight a 10," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "We swam really well and got what we wanted out of the meet. I'm happy with the way we swam, but it's a long season."
The White got off to the early lead, winning both medley relays. The White claimed the women's 400 medley relay (3:59.01) and the men's 400 medley relay (3:27.94), but the green answered in the 1,000 free. Junior Marlys Fuqua (10:25.65) and freshman Alex Crigler took the top two spots to pull the Green within 29-21 after four events.
Behind a 20-11 diving points advantage and winning swims by freshmen L. Colby Ward (men's 1,000 free) and Alex Dockstrader, the Green pulled away to a 71-48 advantage.
Senior Adam Schmitt won the men's 200 free (1:42.53) before the most competitive event of the night, a tie between juniors Julie Kahn and Betsy DeJonge in the women's 50 free. Each Spartan clocked a 24.60, and after the even the Green led by a 90.5-66.5 margin.
Sophomore Joe Schmitt and senior Adam Schmitt posted wins in the 50 free and 200 IM, respectively, and freshmen Rebecca Ebner and Ricky Forrest added first-place swims in the 200 fly.
Meanwhile, the White got winning swims from junior Heather Kiluk (2:10.02 - 200 IM) and sophomore Erinn Wertz (53.37 - 100 free). Joe Schmitt got the Green back on track by winning the 100 free.
White squad freshman Stephanie Fisher (2:06.27) and the Green's Jon LaRocque (2:00.45) won the 200 back events, respectively, and Green squad swimmers Fuqua and Forrest swept the 500 free.
The White team swept the 200 breast, led by sophomore Laura DeFord (2:23.21) and freshman kevin Puskaric (2:07.66). Junior Danielle Williams of the White team was the top diver of the evening, winning the one-meter (299.05) and three-meter (298.65) diving events.
Michigan State athletics employees also were involved with the meet, with Student-Athlete Support Services academic coordinator Jeremy Flynn (Green) and compliance services coordinator Holly Baumgartner (White) serving as guest coaches.
The Spartans open the regular season at home on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 12 p.m. against Illinois.
