BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior captain Matt Kreikemeier sank a penalty kick in the 19th minute to lift the Michigan State men's soccer team past Bowling Green, 1-0, Sept. 20. The win improves MSU to 6-2-0 on the year, and marks the Spartans' third-consecutive victory over the Falcons (1-7-1).
The penalty kick was awarded after a hard foul in the box. With MSU on the attack, junior Ben Pirmann received the ball at the right elbow of the box, and was knocked to the ground by a Falcon defender. Kreikemeier headed to the stripe for the Spartans and sent the game-winner rocketing into the left corner of the net as BGSU goalie Mark Scholz dove right. It was Kreikemeier's second goal of his career and the first in 27 games.
Michigan State out-shot Bowling Green, 13-11, placing six attempts on goal. Junior Kenzo Webster led the offense with four shots, while Kevin Reiman fired three. Senior goalkeeper Jason Tillman recorded four saves for the Spartans, posting his fifth shutout of the season.
Having completed a three-game road trip, Michigan State returns to East Lansing for a Sept. 24 meeting with Big Ten rival Wisconsin. The Green and White has not had a home game since its 1-0 double overtime loss to Northern Illinois on Sept. 3. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m., at Old College Field.
